"Use your words" is a very common phrase you will hear almost every new mother use. I don't know where we pick this up, but it's how we encourage our kids to talk instead of grunt or cry. Here's my problem, I use this phrase mostly when Tessa is upset and crying and I don't know what she wants. I calmly tell her to stop crying and use her words. Her response is always the same. In a pathetic sobbing voice she says "Words".
I need to come up with a different phrase.

I know! They take everything so literally at this age. I always say, "what's wrong? tell me what's wrong." But Penny always answers with, "No!" which is her default answer to questions she doesn't understand or know how to answer. I guess it will just take time.
